echinococus in Kyrgizstan

Dr. Giulia Paternoster, Kubanychbek Abdykerimov, and Prof. Paul Torgerson (section of epidemiology), Philipp Kronenberg and Prof. Peter Deplazes (Institute of parasitology) coauthored an article entitled “Epidemic cystic and alveolar echinococcosis in Kyrgyzstan: an analysis of national surveillance data» which was published in the April Issue of The Lancet Global Health. The article provides surgical incidence estimates of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis at different spatial levels based on all surgical cases reported in Kyrgyzstan between 2014 and 2016. Moreover, it identifies priory areas for public health interventions aiming at reducing the burden of these diseases in Kyrgyzstan. This research is part of the SNF funded project Transmission modelling of emergent echinococcosis in Kyrgyzstan. Full article available here.

A comment article putting our research in context has been published in the same issue of the journal. This comment article has been written by Dr. Adriano Casulli, head of WHO Collaborating Centre for the Epidemiology, Detection and Control of Cystic and Alveolar Echinococcosis (in Humans and Animals), and European Reference Laboratory for Parasites, Department of Infectious Diseases, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Italy.
