The Veterinary Public Health Institute and the Swine Clinic of the University of Bern is seeking applicants to work on a three year applied research project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF): PIG DATA: Health Analytics for the Swiss Swine Industry.

The overall aim of the project is to apply Big Data methods to many highly variable data from the complex Swiss swine production system in order to produce information of value for many stakeholders. The successful applicant will work closely with a diverse research team of clinicians, epidemiologists, and computer /data scientists from multiple research institutes. He/ she will assume a central role in the project, coordinating activities, providing project management and acting as the liaison between the research team and the many industry stakeholder groups in the project. Activities will include helping to model and understand swine production and swine health within the Swiss swine and pork production system, identifying information needs of a wide variety of swine industry stakeholders, developing analytics for information production, and designing communication products tailored to a variety of stakeholder needs. The applicant will also be expected to identify novel research questions, develop approaches for answering these questions within the context of the project and publish results in peer reviewed journals.
We are seeking candidates with training in epidemiology; experience in swine health and production, and a strong interest in statistics and data analytics. Experience with large population or production data sets is an asset. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups including industry stakeholders and researchers will be favored. German language proficiency is preferred, but not essential.
A PhD (or equivalency) in epidemiology, veterinary sciences, animal science, agriculture or a related field is required. Preference will be given to applicants with an undergraduate degree in veterinary medicine.
We will begin screening applicants immediately, and aim to complete our selection by late spring or early summer of 2017. Deadline for application is 31. March 2017
