Professor Paul R. Torgerson

Professor Torgerson is a British trained veterinarian and graduated from Cambridge University in 1986. Subsequently after a period in clinical practice, first as a large animal intern at Glasgow Veterinary School followed by agricultural veterinary practice, Professor Torgerson returned to Cambridge to complete a PhD in Parasitology. He was subsequently appointed as a lecturer at University College Dublin where he developed an interest in parasite epidemiology. In 2002 he was invited to lead a group on parasite epidemiology at the Institute of Parasitology in Zurich and remained there until 2008. Following a brief spell at Ross University in The Caribbean, Professor Torgerson was appointed to the newly created chair of veterinary epidemiology in Zurich from late 2009. Professor Torgerson also holds the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Public Health with a speciality in population medicine and the Diploma of the European Veterinary Parasitology College.

hartnack

Dr. Sonja Hartnack

Dr. Hartnack studied veterinary medicine at the University of Munich and at the University of Liege from 1994-2000. She was awarded her doctorate following studies in animal nutrition from University of Munich in 2002. Between 2002 and 2009 she was employed as a postdoctoral researcher on a number of projects at the Veterinary Faculties of Munich, Leipzig, and the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern. She joined the Veterinary Epidemiology Group in Zurich in early 2010. Dr. Hartnack holds the Diploma in Veterinary Virology from the Veterinary Chamber of Saxony and the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Public Health with a speciality in Population Medicine.

Dr. Fraser I. Lewis

Fraser is a Statistician with a BSc in Statistics from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh in 1996, an MSc in Operational Research from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and PhD in Mathematical Epidemiology from the Department of Statistics and Modelling Science, University of Strathclyde in 2000. He spent four years working for the UK National Health Service before joining the Institute of Evolution Biology, University of Edinburgh, as a post-doc in Biostatistics working for geneticist Prof. A.J. Leigh Brown FRSE. In 2007, Fraser moved to the Scottish Agricultural College becoming their Research Fellow in EPIC, the Scottish Government Centre of Expertise in Epidemiology, and then onto Vetsuisse in Dec 2010.

Iskender

Iskenderali Ziadinov

Iskender trained as a veterinarian at Kyrgyz Agrar University, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, coming to Switzerland in 2003 to the Institute of Virology, Vetsuisse. He later moved to the Institute for parasitology as a postdoctoral scientist under the supervision of Prof. Peter Deplazes. In January 2012 Iskender moved to the Section of Epidemiology. He is actively involved in field work in research projects focusing on the control of zoonotic parasites in central Asia.

Belen Otero

Belen Otero

Belen studied veterinary medicine at the University of Valencia and at the University of Bologna before moving to the UK, where she acted as an enforcement officer (O.V.) for the British Veterinary Public Health Force. After successfully completing an MSc degree in Veterinary Epidemiology in London, she joined the Epidemiology and Public Health Group at the Royal Veterinary College, where she was involved in a number of European funded projects. In July 2011 Ms. Otero began her PhD studies in Vetsuisse as part of an SNSF funded project concerned with modelling Echinococcus transmission.

Marta

Marta Pittavino

Marta studied mathematics at the University of Turin, Italy, with a master thesis in mathematical epidemiology. In January 2012 Marta started her PhD in Computational Epidemiology as part of an SNSF funded project concerned with developing Bayesian Networks as a tool for Zoonotic Systems Epidemiology.
